The importance of language: Why feminists are concerned about the wording in the Asia-Pacific Beijing+20 Ministerial Declaration 

The negotiations between States at the United Nations on documents and declarations are agreed upon by consensus and it all comes down to language. An issue where language is left out can result in the loss of protection in that area. Conversely, if language on a certain issue is included, civil society has one more tool to advocate with their governments to further those areas. It also means that States will have to pledge resources and funding for them to comply with their international commitments.

Assassination Of The Mirabal Sisters Of The Dominican Republic

MirabalSistersStampOn December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 25 (the anniversary of the day of the murder of the Mirabal sisters) as the annual date for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in commemoration of the sisters.

This day also marks the beginning of the 16 days of Activism against Gender Violence. The end of the 16 Days is December 10, International Human Rights Day.

Patria Mercedes Mirabal (February 27, 1924 – November 25, 1960), Maria Argentina Minerva Mirabal (March 12, 1926 – November 25, 1960) and Antonia María Teresa Mirabal (October 15, 1935 – November 25, 1960) — were natives of the Dominican Republic who fervently opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. A fourth sister, Bélgica Adela "Dedé" Mirabal-Reyes[1] was not assassinated the day her sisters were. As of 2007, she currently lives in Salcedo, Dominican Republic. She precedes in the sisters'natal house and works to preserve her sisters'memory through the "Museo Hermanas Mirabal" which is also located in Salcedos de Macoris and was home to the girls for the final ten months of their lives).

Asia-Pacific States adopt Declaration to Advance Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment

CSOs welcome participation, but question lack of progressive language and effective means for implementation

APCSOB2020141120The Asia-Pacific States adopted the Asian and Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Advancing Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment today. The declaration includes the States' commitments to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) and will feed into the global review process dialogue to be held in 2015 at the 59th Session on the Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW).

The representatives of Indonesian women who participated in Asian and Pacific Conference on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: Beijing+20 Review in Bangkok, Thailand organized on 17-18 November 2014 express our disappointment on the statements of Indonesian government in response to the Asian Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Advancing Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment draft outcome document which will be adopted as official statements of Asia and Pacific countries for the advancement of women's rights as mentioned in the Beijing Platform for Action +20.

How far have States in Asia-Pacific gone to achieve gender equality?

Governments report on gains, key challenges, and opportunities

APCSOB2020141119bMinisters from the Asia and the Pacific region met today in the Asian and Pacific Conference on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: Beijing+20 Review to report on their States' gains, key challenges, and opportunities to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women after twenty years of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA). The governments' pledges and priority areas for investment for the next five years will be included in a final ministerial declaration to be adopted at the end of the conference on November 20, 2014.

A representative on behalf of civil society organizations (CSO) delivered a statement to the governments during the ministerial meeting. "The Beijing Platform for Action is an unfinished promise," Abia Akriam from the CSO Steering Committee said. "States need to be accountable."
