Several non-government organisations (NGO) have been building alliances in order to advance gender initiatives at the upcoming World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

With barely two months to go before the Second Preparatory Committee Meeting for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in February 2003, more strategies are utilised by women's organisations to further hone the objectives and goals in relation to the upcoming World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

Many events are already being planned and announced as part of the run-up to the WSIS Phase Two in Tunis, Tunisia in 2005, and one important conference focuses on the still controversial topic of free software.

Civil society organisations (CSOs) are continuously putting up ways of sending out information regarding the WSIS Phase 2 in Tunisia as well as discovering and setting up online meeting places where they can begin or enhance topic-specific discussions about the Summit and its processes.

Lately, Internet governance seems to be the topic most covered as regards the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), especially now that many Internet governance meetings have been concluded and media advocates prepare for the Phase II of the WSIS. Some of these are the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) workshop held in Geneva last 26-27 February 2004; a Rome, Italy workshop by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) last 04 March 2004; and the upcoming two-day Global Forum on Internet Governance happening in New York, USA on 25-26 March 2004.
