Asian NGOs from 14 countries and 32 organisations gathered in Bangkok, Thailand from 22-24 November 2002 to discuss Asian participation in the upcoming Asia-Pacific Regional Conference.

The Gender Caucus of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was formed during the African Regional Preparatory Conference held in Bamako, Mali from May 25 to 30, 2002. It is composed of representatives of organisations that responded to an invitation by (UNIFEM) to contribute to ensuring that gender dimensions are included in the process of defining and creating a Global Information Society that contributes to sustainable development and human security. A multi-stakeholder group composed of women and men from national governments, civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and the United Nations system created the caucus.

Several non-government organisations (NGO) have been building alliances in order to advance gender initiatives at the upcoming World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

A joint statement on the WSIS was released by national, regional and international NGOs participating at the "Asian Civil Society Forum" of the Conference of Non-governmental Organizations in Consultative Relations with the United Nations (CONGO).

Civil society organisations (CSO) and individuals involved in the WSIS process continue their advocacy for free and open source software (FOSS) with the celebration of the first Software Freedom Day.
