Friend --

Typhoon Haiyan – one of the strongest storms in recorded history – devastated entire communities in the Philippines, killing thousands and leaving many homeless.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the estimated 10 million affected and to all those who have lost loved ones. Women in the Philippines need our help now more than ever.

Mindanao PeaceWeavers (MPW), one of Isis International’s partners, is sharing this appeal in the light of the string of woes the entire country (Philippines) is facing of late. Concretely, MPW is calling for an indefinite humanitarian ceasefire and declaration of disaster-affected areas as "humanitarian peace zones". Please read below for details.

With great sadness, the Mindanao PeaceWeavers (MPW), and its convening network-members in Mindanao, Visayas and Manila, would like to extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to the tragedy that has befallen our fellow Filipinos when Typhoon Yolanda rampaged through our vulnerable communities in some parts of Visayas and Mindanao a few days ago.

On the news, round the clock, we see the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in The Philippines. Yes, there were Early Warnings. But, who gets hurt the most in natural disasters - the extremely poor of whom women are the majority, with easily destroyed housing and possessions, and fewer quick evacuation options. There are intersectionalities that enhance the vulnerability of women as searching for children, old age, disabilities, pregnancy, illness. It is the women who try to save family, loved ones, vs. possessions. It is the women who try to keep hope and calm amidst enormous natural destruction. Long after the news has moved on, it is the women who try to find ways for the family to survive, to recover as much as possible, to try to find resilience.
