Isis International together with BALAY Rehabilitation Centre Inc. Philippines and the Centre Studies of Indonesia Eastern Region has embarked on a two-year and two country project on peace-building, “Cultural Politics of Conflict and Peace: Strategising and Capacity-Building for Philippines and Indonesia.”

Months of fighting between the Philippine military and the rebel group, Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have displaced scores of residents in Maguindanao, North Cotabato and other provinces in the South. Aside from constantly fleeing from bombardments and seeking safe shelter, some residents experience military abuse, on the pretext that they are aiding the rebel group.

In mid January, executives of the Chinese milk company Sanlu were handed life and death sentences for causing the deaths of at least six infants and the illness of more than 300,000, who consumed melamine-tainted formula milk. For many, the guilty verdict was expected although there are questions on the exoneration of Chinese authorities.

About three hundred individuals converged in Davos, Switzerland on 31 January 2009 during the World Economic Forum (WEF). The protesters mainly consisted of youth groups, members of Amnesty International, and the Green Party, carrying banners that read, “Wipe out WEF,” “You are the crisis,” among many others.
