The Asian Freedom Film Festival pushed through last December 10 to 12, 2006 in Cebu, Philippines despite the postponement of the ASEAN Summit. With the theme “Women and Migration in the ASEAN,” the festival used films to increase awareness on migrants’ human rights issues. Leading migrants' rights advocates, students, human rights activists, and filmmakers from the region were invited to take part in the film festival.

Various films delving on the issues faced by women migrants in the region were featured. The event also provided a venue for tackling issues such as forced migration and for women to share their experiences as migrant workers.

The opening film, “Don't Fence Me In: Major Mary and the Karen Refugees,” is a chronicle of the life of freedom fighter Major Mary On and reveals the courage and determination of the Karen refugees living on the Thai-Burma border as they fight for their survival.

This three-day event was organised by the Migrant Forum in Asia and Pusat Komas, in cooperation with Freedom from Debt Coalition—Cebu Chapter and the Miriam College Migration Studies Program.
