Two conferences—the “Southeast Asia Media Defence Litigation Conference” and the “Information and Communications Technology for Development”—will be held this May in Hong Kong and UK respectively. Find out how to participate.

Southeast Asia Media Defence Litigation Conference

The University of Hong Kong Journalism and Media Studies Centre, the Southeast Asian Press Alliance, the Oxford University Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (PCMLP), and the International Bar Association are organising the “Southeast Asia Media Defence Litigation Conference” in the University of Hong Kong on May 21-23, 2007.

The three-day conference aims to strengthen media freedom in the region by building and strengthening national and regional capacity for media defence litigation, which has been identified as a key means to promote free media in many countries. This event will serve as a platform for training and networking among participating lawyers from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand to ensure that they are as knowledgeable as possible about both their own national law, and about international and comparative law in the main freedom of expression areas.

Information and Communications Technology for Development

The International NGO Training and Research Centre (INTRAC), a non-profit organisation supporting nongovernment and civil society organisations worldwide by helping to explore policy issues, and by strengthening management and organisational effectiveness, is holding a course on “Information and Communications Technology for Development” on May 23-25, 2007 in London, UK.

This course aims to familiarise development practitioners with principles, approaches and recognised good practice in the application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in different sectors, such as health, education, livelihoods or governance. The course is structured to provide an opportunity for participants to reflect on their own situations, consider how ICTs might be integrated into programmes and organisational development, and to assess how an organisation might take these ideas forward.
