The Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) will hold its 15th annual conference, in Penang, Malaysia from the 17th to the 20th of July 2006.

Together with the Universiti Sains Malaysia, AMIC aims to tackle "Media in Asia: Aspirations, Choices and Realities." The key focus of this conference will be on the diversity and interaction between media environments in Asia.

The AMIC annual conference is the premier event on Asian media, and attracts eminent international representatives and speakers from around the world. It will feature high-profile keynote addresses, plenary sessions, and several parallel sessions. Networking events, cultural programmes, media visits and sightseeing events will also be held in conjunction with the annual conference.

The conference brings together academics, media industry professionals, government media agencies, policymakers, regulators, UN agencies, donors, research groups, civil society organisations, independent consultants, and students.

For the annual conference, AMIC calls for papers on the following topics: Role of Media in National Development; Global Communication & Local Responses; New Media & Digital Technology; Media & Youth; Media, Conflict & Crisis; Media Laws & Regulation; Communication & Education in Asia; Communication & Gender in Asia; Alternative & Community Media; Asian Media Theories, Models & Frameworks; Digital Broadcasting & its Implications; Media & the Millennium Development Goals; Public Service Broadcasting; Communication & Asian Pop Culture; Communication & Cultural Heritage; Media Concentration & Ownership; Communication, Cultural Identity & Pluralism; Media, Democracy & Human Rights; and Communication & Environment.

AMIC also accepts papers on more specific topics like sectoral media issues (eg. in healthcare, agriculture, tourism, entertainment, bio-informatics), media management, community media, and media services.

Because of the high number of people who have expressed interest in participating in the conference, AMIC reports that selection of papers will be highly competitive.

AMIC requests interested parties to email their one-page abstracts or full papers along with contact information and 500 word bios to <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>.  Applications close by March 31, 2006.
