Isis International-Manila is inviting media practitioners, researchers, and academics to send articles for the upcoming issue of Women in Action (WIA) Vol. 3. This WIA issue will look at how the media environments in the Asia-Pacific countries carry messages of development, particularly, how media facilitates and/or hinders participation of citizens in democracy for development in the region.

In light of the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit this January 2007, WIA will give special emphasis on Southeast Asian countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, and how media, as a sphere for public dialogue, can be used for resistance, independence, even subversion of hierarchies and hegemonies in these countries. WIA will also look into how media can reflect social exclusion/inclusion, cultural diversity, and feminist analysis, as exercises in radical citizenship and transformative democracy.

WIA intends to present a dynamic viewing of media and its evolving and changing relationship to democracies in the Asian region. Specifically, WIA calls for papers about

  • Critical views on media audience autonomy and the capacities of citizens to resist the forces of commodification

  • Debates to facilitate social movements' understanding of media's identity, function, and significance in shaping democracy

  • Discussions pertaining to the contemporary meanings and manifestations of “power of the media”

  • Ways in which media institutions have changed with the advent of new information and communication technologies (ICT) and its relations to new ideas about globalisation

  • Conceptual and experiential models of community and independent media (CIM) as an alternative to corporatised media.

Original articles or articles previously presented but not published are preferred.
